This project delivered its message clearly, keeping the focus on three major pop culture studios. The combination of the multi-line chart, bar chart, and bubble chart each address a specific question and explain it well. The COVID-19 reference line on the financial trajectory chart help user to understand and explains the sharp revenue drop in 2020 without requiring any additional text. The bar chart is a well-chosen for the exact value comparison.
The color used for DC and Pixar is too similar, making the lines difficult to distinguish when they close together. The first line chart showing multiple genre trends at once becomes visually busy. Adding a hover interaction that highlights the selected line and fades the others would make it much easier to follow individual genres without losing the overall comparison.
Kelvin Kwan4/21/2026, 8:22:12 AM
As a user, the story is easy to follow right away. The side by side insights with charts worked well too. That part felt very clear. The COVID-19 annotation stood out, and labeling values directly on the bars saved time. The bubble chart felt a bit overwhelming though. I kept wanting to filter by studio and couldn’t. Some hover animations didn’t seem to do anything, which threw me off. I expected more interaction, like clicking insights to update charts. The y-axis on the line chart also felt awkward since billions are shown as 0.0 to 0.55.
Thinking about course concepts, there is a solid foundation here. The narrative structure is clear, annotations are used effectively, and the text integrates well with visuals. At the same time, interaction design could be clearer since affordances are not obvious, axis scaling could be improved for readability, and filtering options would help reduce cognitive load.

This project is highly polished, visually engaging, and shows strong effort in both design and data storytelling. The cinematic black and gold theme works very well because it matches the movie industry topic and creates a memorable experience. The website is also well organized, moving through sections such as motivation, genres, trends, studio rankings, and analysis in a clear sequence that helps users follow the story. I also liked the variety of visualizations, including bar charts, line charts, and bubble charts, which effectively compare revenue, ratings, popularity, and studio performance. Choosing Marvel, DC, and Pixar was a smart decision because these studios are widely recognized and relatable to many users. One suggestion would be to improve chart readability, as some labels and text appear small or low-contrast against the dark background. Adding interactive features such as filters for year, genre, or studio could also make the project more engaging. In some sections, adding more spacing or reducing information density could help lower cognitive load. Finally, a short explanation of data sources and methods for metrics like estimated profit or popularity would strengthen credibility.

I really enjoyed exploring your project. The visual style was incredibly engaging and reminiscent of the 'blockbuster' and Hollywood identity, and the micro-interactions were thoughtful and added incredibly to the experience.
I like how the narrative felt clear, starting with the research question and focusing on the three major studios to avoid any clutter.
I enjoyed the summary of the biggest changes between the 2010s-present; however, the three really caught my attention, and I believe a few small visualizations to accompany them (rather than just a card summary) would've drawn viewers in, connected them more to the overall narrative, and let them visually understand how these factors affected the industry.
The visualization charts are well-done; however, there are a few small, consistent chart spacing issues between legend items and along the x/y-axis number lines.
Lastly, the critical reception chart was quite informative, but it sticks out visually from the rest of the website. It does not follow the same visual style as previous charts and takes viewers out of the experience, as it's a bit jarring.
Overall, great project! I enjoyed exploring the website, playing around with the different elements and learning more about the movie industry through your visualizations and experience!

From a user perspective, the website is visually engaging with a strong cinematic theme that fits the movie topic well. The story is easy to follow, and the combination of charts helps explain different aspects like trends, genres, and studio performance. Features like the COVID-19 annotation and direct value labels make the data easier to understand. However, some charts feel a bit cluttered, like the bubble chart, and I found myself wanting more interaction such as filtering. In some cases, labels and colors were harder to read, especially when lines were similar or text contrast was low.
From a course perspective, the project shows strong narrative structure, effective use of annotations to support interpretation, and good variety in visualization types for different analytical tasks. For improvements, color choices should be more distinct to avoid confusion, interaction design could be improved with clearer affordances and added filtering to reduce cognitive load, and axis scaling and label readability should be refined to make the data easier to interpret.

I enjoyed looking through your work. The movie theme was implemented superbly, while the black/gold color combination contributed to the movie atmosphere from the very beginning. Your project looks professional, creative, and highly relevant to the topic.
I appreciate that you chose Marvel, DC, and Pixar to analyze their movies, because it allows viewers to relate to the data presented here better than if you had chosen some less popular and less known organizations. Moreover, using different types of charts makes the presentation diverse. Each chart tells about a specific issue, and it is easy for viewers to follow the information due to small notes, such as the COVID annotation and chart labels.
The only possible improvement would concern improving readability in a couple of sections by changing colors slightly so that all charts and annotations became more visible. Additionally, I suggest creating filters for the charts with a lot of data so that it is easier to analyze them.
In conclusion, I would like to say that your project looks really professional and was obviously made with great efforts. Thanks for presenting such a nice topic!

Intent and problem seems to be very well communicated throughout the visual language of the project. The focus on these three studios helps the narrative of the story you want to tell.
The graphs although having excellent information seems to be overloaded with too much information, making it hard to read at times.
It was mentioned in your limitations and challenges, while the first two visualizations integrate beautifully with the rest of your site, the sharp contrast of the white background of the last visualization is a bit jarring, breaking the visual identity.
But overall, great project! great visuals!

Hello!
Overall, this project is strong in its visual description of data, as well as providing in depth analysis while still being concise. As a user I like that it gives me a summary of the biggest factor resulting in changes of genre popularity before going into the details with the visualizations as I now can go into the analysis with this information without wondering what causes the fluctuations when looking at the graphs.
Some constructive feedback I would like to give:
Strength:
1) 3 out of 4 graphs use consistent visual language as site, with consistent color categorization that stands for each company's logo color (Marvel's red, DC's blue and PIxar's light blue).
2) The Hover interaction for some visualisations allow users to retrieve and filter specific values.
3) There is a clear stream of narration from start to finish, and visualisations that emphasizes and strengthen the narration.
Improvements:
1) Would be great to also make the last graph more cohesive to the site like the previous ones, because DC's color suddenly become purple.
2) Also the landing page button "Begin the Analysis" with the arrow pointing right sort of contradict the invitation to scroll down, would be good to not include the arrow.
3) For the Rating vs Revenue graph, not sure why but the red bubbles on the top is not responsive to hover interaction. Also some of the purple (DC) circles also aren't responsive to hovering and when I hover over one of them it shows "Finding Nemo" which is a Pixar movie. I would suggest having a different graph for more distinction or having a different interaction for users who wish to look into the details.

The cinematic black and gold theme immediately sets the tone and fits the subject well. The hero section animation, where the pattern shifts with the cursor, was a nice touch that made the entry feel more alive than a static landing page.
The Studio Power Ranking section worked well because the brief studio descriptions sat alongside the visualizations rather than being separated. Having that context immediately available made it easier to interpret the data without scrolling back and forth.
The main area for improvement is the bubble chart. With all three studios plotted together and no filtering option, it became hard to isolate individual patterns. Being able to filter by studio would reduce the visual load significantly.
mza1574/22/2026, 1:06:19 AM
The website was very easy to navigate through and the topics was expressed clearly. I liked how for each visualization, you picked out some of the main findings which helped direct me where to look at and cleared up my confusions.
From a course perspective.
The strengths:
1. consistent colour encoding for the 3 main superhero studios.
2. Visualizations are annotated to highlight major events.
3. The findings are displayed beside each visualization, so I don’t have to spend extra time figuring out the main points.
Improvements:
1. I think the last visualization can be improved to be more consistent with the rest of the visualization. For instance, the colours used for DC and Pixar are not consistent, which made it confusing to interpret the chart.
2. COVID is annotated in the first line chart, but I am also curious about the significant drop in revenue between 2023 and 2024. Adding an annotation for this decline would help others who may have the same question.
3. The bubble chart was a little confusing to understand. It was difficult to connect the three points listed beside it to the visualization, especially the last two points about the 2020 pandemic shock and post-pandemic recovery, since the chart does not include a time or date reference.

"The Triad of Modern Cinema" is a visually impressive project. The design is beautiful and the visualizations are clean, well-crafted, and packed with interesting information. Comparing Marvel, DC, and Pixar across box office revenue, critical reception, and cultural dominance from 2010 to 2025 is a compelling research question and the data really does tell an interesting story.
That said, the navigation experience needs some work. The "Begin the Analysis" button on the hero section jumps you straight to the Genres section, skipping right over the research question that appears just below the hero. As a user this is disorienting because you land in the middle of charts and data without knowing what you are supposed to be exploring or why. A simple fix would be to move the research question up into the hero section so the audience has the context they need before they click anything.
The buttons within Section 1 also create a similar problem. Clicking "Box Office by Genre" jumps you all the way to the Financial Trajectory section, skipping over Section 2 entirely. Section 2 covers some really important context around the pandemic, the streaming shift, and the rise of superhero films, and bypassing it leaves a gap in the story. It feels like these navigation shortcuts made sense to the team while building the site but haven't been tested from a fresh user's perspective. When you are building something you already know where everything is, but a first-time visitor needs to be led through it more carefully.
The core idea of giving users the freedom to explore the data in their own way is a great instinct, but it needs a bit more thought in terms of how the buttons are organized. Right now the experience feels more like bouncing around than navigating, and important parts of the story end up getting skipped. A clearer structure for the interactive elements would make the whole experience feel much more intentional and cohesive.
The foundation here is genuinely strong and the visuals speak for themselves. I think with a bit of organization the website would work even better. Loved the work.

The website conveys a clear story throughout. I like that there is a research question at the start reminding me of the overall goal of the project and what takeaways I will get out of it in the end. The graph choice clearly justify what you are trying to say for each section and the analysis below is very concise, yet very clear and easy to understand.
Design-wise, the overall site is clean, polished while also make it engaging to scroll through. The graphs are minimal and clearly conveys the most important information. However, the last graph looks out of place from the rest of the site due to the inconsistent styling. The Cumulative Profit Comparison graph can also be a little bit wider in height so that it doesn't look squished together. Another minor thing that needs to be improved on is the body text on the hero section, which is really illegible due to the interference with the yellow particles in the background.

I liked the clear narrative of comparing the three studios. The visualisation types fit each section well in answering the questions. The COVID-19 line in the first visualisation was a good addition to explain the sudden dip.
I think the colour encoding of the graphs could fit the colours shown for each studio on the other parts of the website better. It would also help differentiate Pixar and DC better. Some of the text could improve from better contrast to improve readability. Although the hover functions on some of the texts is visually pleasing, it could be misleading as it could come across as an interactive element.
vla834/22/2026, 4:17:33 AM
From a user perspective, the project is visually compelling and easy to engage with from the start. The narrative flow across sections, moving from genre and data trends to studio comparisons and deeper analysis, helps guide me through the story without confusion. I also found the use of annotations, such as the COVID-19 marker and direct labeling, especially helpful in quickly understanding key information like the reasoning as to why there's such a sharp drop in revenue in 2020.
An area that could be improved is the colour selection for DC and Pixar, as they are too similar which could easily confused viewers. Additionally, I found myself trying to click/hover in attempts to filter some of the data. Implementing this could help viewers understand and analyze data easier, as well as reduce cognitive load.
tkl204/22/2026, 4:53:12 AM
This is a wonderful start. I appreciate the slide deck at the beginning, which helped introduce your group's topic. The custom cursor is great, but I feel like its function is applied ambiguously throughout the site. My impression was that it would expand over interactable elements, but it was expanding over the data cards as well, which confused me a bit, especially when they wouldn't do the same when you were hovering over the various visualizations. The visualizations, though, are chosen effectively and portray what they need to with only minor critiques. The line chart tooltips were difficult to read as there was no text hiearchy which differentiated the labels from the data. For the last visualization I it would be nice for it to be styled with the same design language used throughout the site, and it would also be nice to maybe be able to trim the x-axis or add a zoom feature, as many of the points were overlapping, and it was hard to hover over them. But overall, the website is great, and I enjoyed how the content is structured.
bwa714/22/2026, 4:53:54 AM
The cinematic black and gold theme fits the subject matter really well and makes the site feel polished and intentional. The narrative flows clearly from genre trends to studio comparisons, and the COVID-19 annotation on the financial chart does a great job of explaining the 2020 dip without needing extra text. The main areas to improve would be making the DC and Pixar color encodings more distinct, adding studio filtering to the bubble chart to reduce visual clutter, and bringing the last visualization's styling in line with the rest of the site.
Great job yall :D

First thoughts as a user, the visual looks of this website are stunningly well done, the interactions built into each movement of the mouse cursor are very appealing to me, i think they delivered their intended incredibly well.
From a student perspective:
pros:
- For the financial trajectory viz I was easily able to understand the data and make sense of it
- For the total box office by studio viz I think the different graphs were both easy to read and understand the information
- Between the above stated Viz the different graphs i quickly understood their stories
Cons:
- The story for the studio power ranking viz is not apparent to me, so maybe finding a way to make that stand out more or easier to infer
- The bubble chart for the critical reception viz was hard to understand the information, maybe using icons for each IP with a logo next to it would be much quicker to understand rather than using a mouse to hover over each bubble to understand it
- The overall story of the bubble chart viz is hard to understand without the context boxes to the right of the graph, maybe find a way to incorporate the story a bit more in the viz rather than using text boxes on the side

Very interesting to read! As a user I believe there is a lot of visual interest throughout the site that makes it engaging to scroll through and explore. As a student in this class I believe you noticeably cover a lot of ground and clearly state the takeaways from each visualization to support understanding.
Strengths:
- you clearly put a lot of thought and effort into the UI and the micro-interactions are a fun addition to this project
- you have a variety of visualizations showing all sorts of data that supports the narrative well
- navigation is clear with scrolling movements
Improvements:
- some text is hard to read on the hero section, I recommend using colours with stronger contrast for text
- inconsistent wording, as you have some uncapitalized words such "studio Marvel" in the tooltip of your first line graph
- text size is a little small, it seems like you're using 12.48 but minimum 14px or even 16px is recommended for accessible viewing
ylc134/22/2026, 5:48:16 AM
I really enjoyed exploring this project. The visual design is very polished, and the black and gold theme fits the movie industry topic really well, creating a strong and consistent atmosphere throughout the website. The structure of the site is also clear, with a logical flow from the introduction to different analyses, which makes it easy to follow even without prior knowledge. I also appreciated how each visualization is paired with short explanations or key takeaways, since this helps guide users and makes the information easier to understand without having to interpret everything on their own. The variety of visualizations, such as line charts, bar charts, and bubble charts, also makes the experience more engaging.
From a user perspective, the experience is mostly smooth, but there are a few areas where it could be improved. Some interactive elements are not very obvious, so it is not always clear what is clickable or how to interact with certain charts. I also found that navigation can feel slightly inconsistent in some sections, especially when it is not immediately clear how to return to the previous view. In addition, the bubble chart felt a bit overwhelming, as there is a lot of information presented at once, and it can be difficult to quickly understand the relationships between the data points.
From a course perspective, the project shows strong use of visual consistency, clear narrative structure, and effective integration of text and visuals to support data storytelling. However, interaction affordances could be improved so users can more easily understand how to engage with the visualizations. Some charts could also be simplified or supported with additional features like filtering or grouping to reduce cognitive load. Improving readability (such as label clarity or contrast) and making interactions more intuitive would further strengthen the overall user experience.

Well done, Team High Tech! The visualizations, art direction, and interaction design are of high quality and very well thought-out. Spacing out the visualizations, as a strategy to manage cognitive load, was an excellent decision; this choice makes it much easier to follow along with your narrative. I also appreciated the annotations you added, especially the note about Covid-19 in the timeline.
In your abstract, you mentioned wanting to explore whether "[your] feelings towards [studios] matched their performance." I don't think I saw much of that in your video presentation or final website. Maybe a "reflection" or "looking ahead" section at the end would give your audience a strong, memorable takeaway that would really make your project stand out. Great project overall!

As a user, the theme seems pretty cool. I like the aesthetic and fits the topic pretty well. Although I wasn't really enjoying the choice of font, it doesn't really add anything to the project idea.
Strengths:
- I like the sections it was clear and easy to follow with brief descriptions
- I like the user of multiple different kinds of charts as it shows the effort to find the best chart that translates what you want to display
- I also liked the storytelling overall from start to finish
Improvements:
- although you did use several different kinds of charts, it wasn't necessarily interactive and engaging other than hovering
- I also found it hard to understand the relationship between the value of movie and the rating of the movie what the idea behind showing such visualization
- lastly it seems redundant to have a sticky nav at the top but also a footer that does the same thing
But overall I did enjoy reading and going through the project.
Alireza Karduni4/24/2026, 12:06:46 PM
Cool project. Hope you'd make the visualizations fit the color of the app. You should directly annotate line charts.
